Correa's Last-Minute Goal Secures Victory for Atletico Madrid Against Athletic Bilbao

Angel Correa's decisive goal from a counter-attack during stoppage time earned Atletico Madrid a crucial 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Read more about how this thrilling La Liga match unfolded and how Atletico clinched the win in the final moments.

In a captivating match where both teams showcased attacking flair but struggled to convert chances, Atletico Madrid finally found the breakthrough two minutes into stoppage time.

The game’s decisive moment came when Atletico forward Alexander Sorloth dispossessed Inigo Lekue at the halfway line and set up substitute Angel Correa.

Just four minutes after coming off the bench, Correa skillfully rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.

Although Sorloth missed a golden opportunity to double Atletico's lead shortly after, his earlier contribution proved enough to secure Atletico's second win of the season.

This victory lifted Atletico Madrid to second place in the standings with eight points, trailing leaders Barcelona by four. Athletic Bilbao, last season's Copa del Rey champions, now sit 10th with four points.

Diego Simeone's side entered the match under pressure following a goalless draw at home against promoted Espanyol on Wednesday. To add to their challenges, goalkeeper Jan Oblak was ruled out late due to illness, forcing a last-minute change.

Despite these setbacks, Atletico’s defense remained solid, holding off the team that had ousted them from the Copa del Rey semifinals last season.

While clear chances were few and far between, the hosts dominated possession, with substitute goalkeeper Juan Musso making a crucial save from an Oihan Sancet strike—Athletic's only shot on target. Atletico, on the other hand, posed a consistent threat on the counter-attack, with new signings Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher both creating promising opportunities. However, it was Correa’s late heroics that ultimately sealed the win for the visitors.
